Travel
Clinic
Welcome to our Travel
Clinic. There is lots of useful information here to help you
learn about vaccination requirements and health issues for
the places you are visiting. Remember there is much more to
preventing illness abroad than just having a few jabs!
If you are
travelling abroad we will provide current advice on
immunisation requirements and can administer all vaccines at
the Medical Centre. We are a registered Yellow fever Centre.
To provide a comprehensive assessment of your needs we need
you to provide certain information about yourself and your
proposed trip. Please complete a "Travel Form" form which
you can download from the download section below. It is also
available from Reception. Please print off a copy and return
it to us at the surgery. You may like to fax it back on
01689 862247. We will shortly be able to receive these by
email but in the meantime please return by hand, mail or
fax. Please then contact Reception a minimum of 4 days later
for an appointment with one of our Nurses. Your destinations
will then be checked against a regularly updated on-line
database and we will provide current information about
necessary vaccinations, anti-malarial medications where
indicated and other health advice. A full course of
vaccinations can take up to six weeks so give as much
notice as possible. If it is a "last minute" trip we can
also provide appropriate advice although there may not be
time to complete all the necessary vaccinations. Please note
that most vaccinations are provided free of charge on the
NHS but some special cases are outside these arrangements
and you will have to pay a fee. This includes anti-malarial
medication and certain vaccines such as Yellow Fever and
Japanese B encephalitis.
Our Travel
clinic is available to patients who are not registered at
the Medical Centre, but in these circumstances you will have
to pay for all vaccinations. Your own doctor may be able to
provide them free of charge on the NHS so do check. Our
current charges are available from Reception and are also
available in the download section below.
Travel Kits
containing basic dressings and first aid items but also
syringes, needles and suture materials are available for a
small charge. These are recommended for those travelling to
remote areas where little medical care may be available.
There are
several excellent websites which provide lots of useful
information. These are also listed below but in particular
you may wish to visit a free public website provided by the
NHS - "fit for travel". It gives lots of useful information
about travel to most destinations including vaccinations
necessary, general health advice and news of any local
disease outbreaks. The
Department of Health's travel advice site is full of helpful
information including details of the new European Health
insurance card (EHIC) which replaces the old E111 form. This
is necessary to obtain emergency medical treatment abroad.
You can apply online for this card through the Department of
Health's website link below as well as in person from Post
Offices and most Travel Agents. The "General Travel Advice
leaflet" summarises what you need to know. The Leaflet
Treasure Trove below contains some excellent leaflets and
advice on more specialist areas such as backpacking, drugs
information and visits to the Hajj. Well worth a look. Happy
reading!
We are very grateful to Jane Chiodini for allowing us to
reproduce some of her material, and for providing some of
the leaflets in the treasure trove.
